NAHB Customer Service Course
Remodelers Council will highlight retirement savings opportunities at its next meeting
Join Ed Tyng and Jonathan Jones of Mass Mutual at the Wednesday, Feb. 8, Remodelers Council meeting as the men present the methods and opportunities to accumulate retirement savings.
 
Tyng and Jones will discuss the positives and negatives of each of the employer-sponsored and individual programs to include but not limited to:
  • All types of individual IRAs (both Roth and Traditional)
  • Annuities (fixed, immediate and variable)
  • 401k plans, Simple IRAs, SEPP (Simplified Employee Pension Plans)
  • Private (non-qualified) supplemental retirement plans (dividend-paying life insurance)
John Wobbleton, CPA, will also be on hand to field any tax questions that may arise. The event will take place in the TBA boardroom.

How can you benefit from Cloud technology?

Sean Bowers of NetTek, will present "Forecasting the Cloud: An Overview of Cloud Computing and the Technologies Involved" at TBA on Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2012.

Get to know the 2009 IRC

Find out what’s new and what’s changing in the 2009 International Residential Code at the next member breakfast forum. Building officials from South Hampton Roads will bring members up to date on the new regulations, which go into effect March 1, 2012.
 
It will be held at 7:30 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 23, at TBA. The forum, sponsored by Dominion Virginia Power, is free, includes a light breakfast and open to all members.

After the breakfast, brush up on Virginia Beach’s Accela Permitting Software. Robin Morse and other Permits and Inspections staff will present a brief tutorial on the software, as well as tackle some frequently asked questions. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn additional tips for a better Accela Software experience.

Sign up now for RAM school
Register by 5 p.m., March 2

Registration is under way for RAM school, the 40-hour entry-level training program in on-site management. Classes will be held on Monday and Wednesday evenings beginning March 7 through May 9 from 6:30-9:30 p.m. in the TBA boardroom. 

The RAM Management School, conducted by the TMHC, has been designed to prepare students pursuing certification for successful completion of the RAM examination and to further the professional advancement of on-site management through continuing education. 

Tuition costs $375 for members and $475 for nonmembers. Enrollment is limited to 60 students. Deadline for registration is 5 p.m., March 2. Reservations are on a first-come, first-served basis.

Mark your calendars for the Mid-Atlantic Home & Garden Show

Mark your calendars now for some home inspiration from March 9-11, 2012, at the Virginia Beach Convention Center. Join Tidewater Builders Association as we present our 27th annual show at the Virginia Beach Convention Center. This event is one of the largest consumers shows in the region and is one of 30 selected for The National Home and Garden Show Series.

The show will feature nearly 500 exhibits of products and services for the inside and outside of the home from flooring to roofing and everything in between. Celebrity headliners and home and garden experts also will cover a range of home and garden topics.

Admission cost $10 for adults and is free for children age 12 and under. Two-day passes are $17 each and three-day passes are $23. Active-duty and retired military and senior citizens will receive a $2 discount. Parking is free.

Highlights include:

  • The Wall Wizard Brian Santos, a professional painter who now shares tips and techniques of color selection, tools, painting, faux finishing, wallpaper stripping and tricks of the trade guaranteed to take some of the stress out of these DIY projects to home show audiences across the country.
  • Outdoor living designs featuring six outdoor living spaces from local landscaping companies. 
  • Indoor living designs featuring four designer rooms will from local interior designers.
  • “Let’s Get Buggy,” a children's puppet show from Spectrum Puppets, which shines a light on the benefits of bugs.
  • Now we’re cookin’, featuring the Culinary Institute of Virginia.  
  • And go green with members of TBA’s Green Building Council
