Tidewater Builders Association: Power Tools

P is for Political Leadership

Perhaps one of the most important benefits TBA provides to those in the shelter industry is a voice that gets heard in the political arenas and public debate. Our goal is to save builders' and home buyers' valuable time and money with a proactive stance that prevents unnecessary regulation of our industry for political purposes. We strive to make the American dream of homeownership a reality for all citizens.

What we do:

  • Provide TBA members with advance information on shelter industry issues at all levels of government
  • Offer professional and qualified input on the benefits of residential growth to the public debate
  • Provide fiscal impact reports and analysis for proposed legislative and regulatory actions to local municipal governments and state agencies
  • Actively fund the election of pro-business local and state candidates through our Political Action Committee
  • Meet regularly with municipal leaders to discuss policies and proceedures
  • Guide members through local procedures to save them time and money

At the local level, we review:

  • Fees and requirements for plan review and permits
  • Zoning and subdivision ordinances
  • Comprehensive land-use plans
  • Construction standards
  • Public facilities standards

At the state level, we:

  • Oppose impact fees and adequate public facilities legislation
  • Support reasonable development bonds assessed by local governments
  • Oppose local and state legislation that allows government versus market demand to control the timing of development
  • Participate in various local and state boards and commissions that regulate the industry
  • Oppose local efforts to implement regulations that supercede the Uniform Statewide Building Code and add to the cost of homeownership
  • Support comprehensive broad-based revenues to reduce local dependence on the real estate tax (which provides a disincentive to approval of affordable housing stock)

At the national level, we:

  • Support policies and regulations that encourage affordable housing and homeownership
  • Support smart growth initiatives that promote efficient use of existing infrastructure
